phpbb to smf

Ok i have a quick question

lets say
i have phpbb on http://www.site.com/forums/ [nofollow]
where would i upload SMF so that when i upgrade it goes to http://www.site.com/forums/ [nofollow]

do i just upload up to the same folder as phpbb is in, and than convert?
or do i upload it to a differant folder and convert and it magically goes into the right folder?

or am i completely off track

Ive figured out the questions how ever i have one more question

I try converting phpbb to smf but i run into the following problems

1) i goto the conversion page in the smf folder

smf=http://www.site.com/forums/smf
phpbb=http://www.site.com/forums/
2) i input the right data (in the conversion.php in the smf base folder
3) it pulls me over to the installer for smf (i follow this through)

after that it installs SMF to the directory where SMF was, not where php was, and it doesn't convert any data across
basically a clean install

Could you please tell me where i go wrong, or if im using the wrong version of the converter or anything bad
