Hi,

I'm a moderator at hxxp:nakokulma.net [nonactive]. Recently we have had issues with people using rather weird combinations of characters as their visible user names in the forum. To ease the load from moderators, I wrote a quick hack to limit the allowed characters to dash, period, space, numbers and the letters in Finnish alphabet.

Now that hack was for Yabb SE that we're still using. We're already running a test forum with SMF that we plan to use in the main forum somewhere in the near future as it stabilizes. For SMF I was wishing that there was already an option for limiting the characters in names but unfortunately I was unable to find one. So what I'm requesting is:

An option to set a regular expression for legal visible user names

This would be a great help for forums that don't want to allow visible user names like '!>-<!' and the like. In a forum where serious discussion between adults takes place, such user names just don't fit - at least that's the opinion on our forum. Of course other forums may wish to have different policies. An option such as this would give each forum an effective tool for setting their own policies regarding visible user names.

Owdy

I think this is great idea. Let admin choose from admin panel what special characters to allow, if any.  'All' 'Nothing' 'define:'

I was wondering.. is this request implemented yet? It's already 2 years since..

I can't seem to find the setting on my 1.1 RC2

I use joomla intergration with SMF and some user with very long username / name is breaking the table position in IE
