Daily/weekly summaries about new posts?

Another newbie question -- is there a way (mod?) to let members have e-mail notifications of new posts not for each post individually, but as daily or weekly summaries (i.e. one e-mail containing the senders and subjects of all new posts within that period, either within a specific board or all boards he has subscribed to)?

Or should one use the 'RSS feed' feature to achieve similar effect? If so, could someone point me to a detailed explanation or tutorial?

Thanks in advance,
newuser

H

There is a mail digest feature in the next version of SMF :)

For now hopefully someone will write a mod for you

Thanks for giving the hope :)

But still -- can a RSS feed be used for a similar purpose (i.e. to get a list of new posts within a given period or since one's last visit, without actually accessing the forum)? If yes, then is the procedure to set up such a feed described in detail somewhere?

Hi  H

I didn't see it in 1.1.4

Any idea when it will be available, and has anyone written a mod for it yet?

 :o

So it'll need the headache of a full upgrade to get it then  :'(

I do hope the upgrade method is going to be built to be as easy as possible?  (I'll have to do it on a live forum on a live server - I don't have an offline server to do the build on  :(

the upgrade is just as easy (and is actually more intuitive) than it has been.

metallica - sorry but that still tells me nothing - I'm used to osCommerce upgrading (full manual hacks of all files) - what is the process for upgrading SMF?

In very very simple terms, you overwrite the files and run a script called as upgrade.php

See Upgrading in SMF Docs.

You can find the docs for upgrading here:

Upgrade SMF

Basically you upload a new copy of all the files (obviously keeping attachments) and then run an upgrade script which updates the database. You'll need to install new copies of mods due to the large amount of changes but this shouldn't be too difficult.

Hi H

appreciate the input, but it still doesn't clarify enough

I'm not a programmer (don't even rate myself as a hacker) though I do learn workarounds eventually

Unfortunately saying "but this shouldn't be too difficult" is like a fish teaching an elephant deep-sea diving and saying "it's easy - you just open your mouth and let the water flow over your gills"

Sorry, but I don't have the experience or training to follow fluffy instructions.  Any chance the SMF team could have someone spend some real time on prepping idiot-proof step-by-steps in time for v2.0 going to public RC or final?

Alternatively, any chance someone could develop a mod package for 1.1.4  and I can then stick with the old technology - having looked at the new stuff, for me, I don't see enough advantage to risk stress-induced coronaries by upgrading through something I'm not sufficiently competant to implement if the instructions are vague.

Regards and thanks for all the hard work

Hopefully by the time 2.0 has a final release the instructions will be improved a bit. If not then I'm sure either myself or someone else would be happy to walk you through it in more detail :)

Thanks H

Maybe I'm just stressing because I've got too many things on the go and not getting completion with any of them, which causes me to immediately get defensive about anything that could add to the workload and learning curves.

That said, with the current 1.1.4 install running smoothly (wish I had time to work on the appearance though) I'm pretty loathe to risk that "success" by mucking up an upgrade if I'm even the slightest bit unsure that I can do it without problems.

Dunno if that makes sense to you?  Maybe by the time 2.0 comes out, I'll have cleared some of the workload and be a bit happier about trying something new.
