New Posts cookie to be turned off if you click on the post directly

This issue plagues vBulletin forums too.

Say you have one new post in a thread, inside one of your forum categories.
When you get to the main index page, you see the new_post icon showing you that there is a new post in that category. You also get the "go to last post" link from the main page allowing you to go directly to that post, and never have to load the actual category thread listing itself.

Now you have read that post, but if you were to close the browser and reopen it, you'd still see the new_post icon enabled because it appears the cookie gets cleared when you visit the thread listing for that category, and not from reading the actual post.

Could this be set to trigger on the post itself, if and only if there is only one new post. Obviously if there were more than one new post in different topics this wouldn't be an issue.
