External Login using SMF User/Pass

Hey Folks.

I have a site that runs, and uses SMF for the external forum. The actual main site is hosted on the same box as the forum, and I'd like to use the SMF user credentials to facilitate user login and user registration for the main site. I don't see the point in having seperate user/pass tables when the users will 99% of the time use the forum too. My question is are there any examples of people doing this, and also what is the salting procedure that SMF uses too?
