ILLEGAL COPY OF SMF

Hi

I just upgraded from 1.1 RC3 to 1.1.1 and its says this at the bottom:

Sorry, the copyright must be in the template.
Please notify this forum's administrator that this site is using an ILLEGAL copy of SMF!

What has gone wrong?

Oldiesmann

Re-upload the Themes directory as something didn't get uploaded properly.

Alt-Ctrl

Sorry for bringing this up again.

I get the same message, but the only thing I've done is to try a new theme. Should I try to reinstall it?

www.heartofracing.com

NEMINI

is the theme written for the version of smf you are using?
signatures are boring.

Alt-Ctrl

I got SMF 1.1.2 and the theme is this one. http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=116

So I guess thats whats causing it?

edit:
One other thing, as you can see. The theme is working fine in the forum, but when you are viewing the portal itself, the theme colors dosen't show up. Does that allso have anything to do with the versions?
Or should I ask for help at the portal team?

NEMINI

I don't know anything about mk portal but if its like TP, then you need the portal version of the theme.
signatures are boring.

redone

TP is not like mkportal in the respect of there being portal themes. Whist there is some MK portal skins most users tend to run the forum wrapped within MK portal and this does not require a special theme.

It could be a potential issue with the CSS of the theme your using. What happens when you switch to another theme?

p.s Besides the notice about illegal copy of SMF indicates some missing files from your template.

Alt-Ctrl

I'l try to reinstall the theme to try to fix the indication of illegal copy.

Other themes works perfectly with the portal, byt they don't have that kind of backround with color that gets lighter/darker regarding if you look down or up on the page.

redone

If I get time I will take a look on my board. I have not used MK portal in sometime though so I am a little rusty.

Alt-Ctrl

Ok, I'l try to contact the guy that made the theme.

Thanks :)

Alt-Ctrl

Ok, I didn't get any response from him.

But I have noticed that I get the error even with the default theme, have there happened something under the upgrade from the old version maybe?

How can I fix this?

NEMINI

are your language files all up to date?
signatures are boring.

Alt-Ctrl

hmm, how can I check that?

redone

Go into the admin panel of your SMF forum.

if you haven't installed any mods yet, you could try and re-upload the entire default theme folder. This folder is in /Themes/

It seems to be missing files. I'd download the 1.1.2 install file, unzip it on your pc, go into /Themes/ and take 'default' and upload it.

I get this upgrading from 1.0.10 to 1.1.2:

QuoteSorry, the copyright must be in the template.
Please notify this forum's administrator that this site is missing the copyright message for SMF so they can rectify the situation. Display of copyright is a legal requirement. For more information on this please visit the Simple Machines website.

The old forum had a custom theme (with the SMF link and all), I've renamed the old theme and uploaded again the Default one and Language files but I can't see any improvement.
Code:

Upgrading...
Making SMF MySQL strict compatible... Successful.
Adding more room for the buddy list Successful.
Change some column types to accomodate more messages. Successful.
Final clean up... Successful.
Taking the forum out of maintenance mode... Successful.
Upgrade Complete

Maybe I should had changed the Theme back to the Default one before the upgrade but now...

How can I log in? What do I do?

I've tried twice 4 times upgrade.php

It keeps saying "Sorry, the copyright must be in the template." I mean that this is the only text that shows up, I can't log in or see the Index, browse, etc.

I've even deleted the old custom Theme.

metallica48423

as i said, if theres no mods installed, try uploading the ENTIRETY of the /Themes folder from the install package.

if there are mods, then make sure theme_copyright(); ( i think thats the function) is echoed in index.template.php

Already done, but I'm doing it again now.

Ouch! There was one mod (Mambo Integration 1.0), how can I remove that?

metallica48423

what i'd do is uninstall that mod, and then replace all your themes with fresh copies (esecially the default theme)

download the 1.1.2 install package, unzip it, grab the Themes Directory, and write over whats there

and then reinstall the mod.

Do I just delete the file from the Packages forlder?

I've find it on "Sources", do I have to delete anything else?

Nothing, the same weird/empty page with the copyright text.

metallica48423

odd... i can see everything fine, just at the bottom theres a copyright warning.

I can take a look quickly if you wish but i would need admin access to do so. If you find my account in phpmyadmin and set the group id to 0 it would do it...

I helped fix this on a site some time ago.
What i did there was that i replaced the /Sources/load.php /Sources/Subs.php and the /themes/Default/index.template.php and i had to update this part to the custome themes he had installed.

// Show the "Powered by" and "Valid" logos, as well as the copyright. Remember, the copyright must be somewhere!

That got rid of the ellegal notice in the bottom on all themes. Even the older outdated themes he wanted to keep.
He had to add the theme makers copywrite though.

M70

But I've already deleted the old Theme and deleted/uploaded again the Themes and Sources folders.

M70

Solved using repair_settings.php :)

Scummbuddy

I followed G6's method a few posts up, and was also able to get rid of the "Illegal Copy" from the bottom of my page. I also went through my directory and got rid of all the blah_blah.php~ (the ones that have the squiggly afterwards) which allowed me to view more pages than normal, but I still can not log in, nor make new accounts.

Would it be safe to delete my entire directory on my webspace, and then reinstall smf 1.0.1 and then upgrade through the forums? I wouldn't lose all of my previous forum posts would I? That is safe and stored on my mysql server on godaddy, right?

The database error most likely means that the database needs upgraded.
upload upgrade.php and the two sql files then run that from the browser.

I was able to put back up the three files you mentioned, and successfully reinstalled version 1.1.1, but then, again, trying to login I get this message:

-----------------
You were unable to login. Please check your cookie settings.
-----------------

So, I still figured something was wrong, but I did "allow all cookies" for another try at logging in, but it didn't work. (earlier, before the reinstall, I once had it at the point that said "security features have changed, you must relogin below" after trying to login)

I tried to register a new person, but after filling out the information and hitting "I agree", I just get dumped back at the Register for the forum page.

Are there any other problems that could be causing this?

SleePy

Did you run upgrade.php from your browser?
Jeremy D ~ Site Team / SMF Developer ~ GitHub Profile ~ Join us on IRC @ Libera.chat/#smf ~ Support the SMF Support team!

Scummbuddy

Yes, sorry I didn't specifically say that, but that's what I meant in my previous post.

SleePy

Well your site is still giving me the database error which means something isn't fully upgraded when you ran the upgrade.php

Open settings.php and add in the database section
$db_show_debug = true;

Hopefully it will show us more about the database error.

Is there something I should be looking for now that I've uploaded an appended settings.php? Something to do with the database error?

Looks you you suffer from serious corrupted sourcefiles. Have you tried uploading the /Sources folder and files again? What mods have you installed?

Does everybody gets the banned message? :P
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

Scummbuddy

So I reuploaded the sources folder and files like you suggested.

I tried to log in but as it is "thinking" I am redirected to a page that shows this:

and then drops me back at an "error has occured" "You were unable to login" page, where it says "sorry guest, you are banned from posting or sending personal messages on this forum." at the top of this page, I get this Notice:

And to answer your other question about mods, this is my Packages folder:

I know that most of these are self explanatory, but there are others that may not be. I sure wish I could log into my admin ability, so I could get the official names of the above files to share.

-------------

Is there any other information that I can share that may track down my crazy problem?

xenovanis

I still think this is due to corrupted files/ What ftp-client are you using?
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

G6™

Have had the same issue on one site i helped on.

The error there was exactly what is said, the files didnt get uploaded and REPLACED correctly.
The permissions on some files were owned by the server, and i couldent replace them through FTP or Cpanel at all.
The solution were to contact the host, ask them to change the owner of the files, and then it worked just fine.
So check and make sure the files DO get uploaded correct, aswell as OVERWRITTEN as they should during the upgrade.
FileZilla shows if any file uploaded are bad, as it gives a note on what file and in what folder and set it to "critical transfer error".

Scummbuddy

I use a fairly old ws_ftp program to upload, fyi.
( Version 5.08 2000.02.23 )

---------

Could you be more specific as to what I am to say to GoDaddy when I say to "change the owner of the files"?

Should I remove any of the files that have a "~" on the end? (for instance settings.php~. (I'm assuming thats the backup copy made during the upgrade.

Thanks for the tip about FileZilla. I'll see about switching to that soon.

SleePy

well for sure remove settings.php~
As it could be viewed in a browser and we don't want that. SMF makes settings.php backups as Settings_bak.php

Just tell godaddy that the owner of the files is not your user and you can't do things with some of the files.
You could try linux server which doesn't have user problems.
Jeremy D ~ Site Team / SMF Developer ~ GitHub Profile ~ Join us on IRC @ Libera.chat/#smf ~ Support the SMF Support team!

Scummbuddy

Sadly, I am on a linux server....

And the nice man I talked to said that he talked to his 'advanced team' and that they were unable to change the name for someone on a shared server.

They ran a check through my databases and they came back stating that everything is connected fine and they mentioned that it looks to be something wrong with my simplemachines software.
----------
So, I'll try to reupload the forum with FileZilla and I'll report back.

Hey, guys, I'm getting the exact same copyright notice at the bottom of the page.

I upgraded from 1.07 to 1.1.2, and the upgrade went without a hitch-no errors, except this one. I've read the entire thread here on this, and none of the suggestions have helped.

I reuploaded the themes directory from both the downloaded upgrade folder, and the downloaded install folder, still getting the message. Here's a screengrab if it helps:

Strangely, the news from my previous 1.07 site shows up, but absolutely nothing else...

If it helps, here's the code from the index.template.php file about copyright:

// Show the "Powered by" and "Valid" logos, as well as the copyright. Remember, the copyright must be somewhere!
echo '

', theme_copyright(), '

Okay, I think I've solved it now.

The upgrade didn't upgrade my smf_themes table, even though the upgrade went without a hitch and reported no errors with updating my database.

It was still pointing to the old site's theme folder and urls. I used phpmyadmin to manually change the url for theme_url, images_url and theme_dir for each theme. It seems to be working now (www.lyzrdstomp.com/forum).

My problem somehow fixed itself. I do believe it was a faulty transfer that caused the problem. As I was trying once again to move over all the files, I noticed once that a red line (error) came and went during the transfer, in the transfer view window. When I could stop the transfer and looked back to see what it was, it was too far back to check, but I suspect it was Load.php.

After going through and reloading all of the sources folder practically one by one, my forum is back to its healthy state.

I want to thank everyone who came and gave their opinion on the problem.

And I wanted to move to FileZilla but it just won't seem to work with my computer. I get the rare error that others get, the 530 Login authentication failed; unable to connect.

Oh well, that's not for these boards. I may just try FireFtp instead.

qtime

I resetup the owner in the themes directory and it worked ok after that.
