I go to my profile but I am not sure how to add an image. Usually I have a browse option from where I can specify a location on my hard drive and the picture gets added. However I do not have this option with SMF. What can I do to add images to the signature? Thank you!

You can use [img][/img] bbcode tags. So if you wanted the image from: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/Themes/testTheme/om_logo.png in your signature, you would use:

And what if the image is on my hard drive? Does it only work if the image is on a website?

Yes, its better if you upload the image to your server/host and take it from there

So signatures have to be on a website first? I can't add them from my hard drive directly?

It looks like you desire some sort of signature image upload feature. This is not a default feature in SMF (currently you can only have avatar images uploaded from your computer), but I'll move this to the Mod Requests board, so those who are looking for mods to write may see this idea and others can support this idea if they like it.
