Stack Overflow and out of Memory Errors

This has been posted a few times before but I thought I'd post my experience in case it helps others.

Almost out of the blue one of my bridged sites (1.0.12 / 1.1.1 / 1.1.6 ) started throwing out the following errors when wrapped and viewed in IE 6 or 7 (fine with FireFox).

Stack overflow at line: 433

and

Out of Memory at line 404

It worked fine unwrapped in IE.

Now in the past this has been attributed to one of two things:

1) not having this on the bottom of your Joomla template:

<? mysql_select_db($GLOBALS['db_name']); ?>

or

2) The SMF header being inside the body of the Joomla site. Sometimes fixed by installing this mod if using default SMF template:

http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=265

However, despite trying all of the above on a cloned test site I couldn't get rid of the error messages. Even installed different Joomla and SMF templates and it still persisted.

Eventually I found the problem. A few days before I had set the way external avatars were handled in SMF if they were too large. I had set it to "Resize with Javascript". As I use FireFox mainly I did'nt notice an issue to some days later. However, this was the problem. Setting it to any of the other options stopped the error messages.

Hope the info helps someone else.   :D

(Oh, and yes I've since upgraded to 1.1.2 and 1.1.7  ;) )
