Before any of you says there is no need for SEF URLs since they have no impact on indexing by search engines and is a major resource hog I'd like you to consider a number of things:
1. As long as SEF URLs include topic/board ID there's almost no additional load - no extra database queries, just a string parsed to get the ID
2. Any text in the URL is considered to contain keywords, which do help with search engines, even if it only means google's supplementary search results
3. SEF URL is more userfriendly. It's common practice to paste URLs in posts just between [ url ] [ /url] tags, and not [ url= ] [ /url] and that means links like http://www.simplemachines.org/community/topic,164742.0.html -
I'd rather see http://www.simplemachines.org/community/topic,164742.0,Extra_Features_for_SMF_2.0.html.
