[Mod Request] Member group application

I was using phpBB and in phpBB there was a link named "membergroups" this link sent you to the list of membergroups and you could choose a group and join it without PM or mails. I searched the site but I cant find a mod like this.

This feature will be available in SMF 2.0. In the meantime I am considering writing a mod for it for SMF 1.1, but cannot make any promises at the moment and I am too busy to work on it right now.
