Export/Import Profile Info

I got this idea the other night after registering for a YaBB SE board and thought it would be a great thing to have. I don't know about you, but I like to keep my profile pretty much the same on all the boards I joined, and get tired of having to fill out everything when I join another board. I thought it might be nice to have an option where users could export their profile settings to a data or text file, and then have the option of importing these settings when editing their profile. Only certain things would be exported, and sections of the profile that were added by a mod wouldn't be exported... This way, the user could quickly export all their settings - time, signature, messenger stuff, homepage, email address, etc. to a file and then just import these settings again whenever they wanted. It would save time, and be quite nice. I don't always remember what the various things for the time format are, and it usually takes me several minutes to either find the setting on another board, or figure out how I want it displayed...

I like the idea... just export it all out and import it all in...

For me though, I have to be in a certain "mood" (yes its silly) to join a forum anyways... which is usually the same "mood" to go through and fill in all the profile forms...

Like I said... this could be optional... Users would choose whether or not they wanted to do this...

I was thinking along the lines is theres an export and an import button on the edit profile page...

Should use the vcard standard, imho.

That would work... Outlook also uses VCards...

I would use the xml fetch profile method, I was thinking about it when I wrote the feature.

Well, whatever works. I know nothing about xml, so as long as it works and it's fast, I don't care how you do it.

WOW! this topic is nearly 5 years old!

I like this idea and have not seen that it was ever added. Nor have I found a mod that would add it. So I was wondering, just how far this idea went and if it is possible to import profile info.

Funny thing, I thought of this idea and searched to see if it's been discussed and here it is.  I think it should be done.  Right now I log into a profile of a forum using smf elsewhere and copy/paste my sig and such but it would be nice to have it in a file that could be uploaded at registration to make it easier.  Include all user-defined options.

I support this proposal too, would make a cool feature as I too would like to keep settings upon moving to other forum websites with the same smf installed

Even though an import does not yet exist, exporting is already (somewhat) available. Take a look at index.php?action=.xml;sa=profile;u=<the user's ID> (eg. http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=.xml;sa=profile;u=9547). It's not exactly what you're asking for, but it's still useful

Ok, now if we could upload that we'd be all set.  Plus we need to encode the avatar too (if uploaded and not linked).  Basically I want 1 click and I'm registered and set up the way I want
