i have been having trouble with me forum lately in that when you try to send a PM with special characters/ alt codes, the forum automatically makes them lowercase, and with alt characters, a "Ó" is completely seperate from "ó", and the member is not found

any help in this rather weird problem would be appreciated

This is a pure guess.

As the forum is set to use the English language, by default, those charcaters, which aren't English, won't be in the fonts that SMF uses.

Any errors in Admin > Forum Error Log?

Have you installed or converted your forum to UTF-8?

the forum is UTF-8

Any Mods installed?
Are you using a custom theme?
