Non-technical description of bridge functionality wanted

Can anyone give a short summary of precisely what the bridge does and how the two products are bridged (from a user/functionality perspective)

Or point me to a thread/description of this.

1) SMF is wrapped in the Joomla template (optional)
2) A user only needs to login once to be logged into both apps.
3) A user only needs to register once to be registered in both apps.
