Did I get this all wrong?
Yes, you did.

The license applies to distribution, not use.
In layman's terms, all you have to do as a user is give proper credit where credit is due.

In other words, keep the copyright intact. The rest of the software you can modify to your heart's content. If you can and want to combine SMF and Joomla into your very own single program, go ahead and do it. Just don't remove their respective copyrights AND don't distribute the program.

Aha

So Orstio? (Simplemachines, SMF?) aren't allowed to distribute the Bridge to me (user) then?

I'm using ( Not distributing i think) Bridge 1.6 with all credits? That version was distributed by Simplemachines?

I would like to uppgrade the Bridge not become a programmer myself.

Thanks
Johan

please don't bump by reposting your own message again just minutes after posting the first time...

you can use any copy of the bridge you have downloaded. 1.1.6 is fairly current. I'm still using 1.1.6 on one of my sites.

We continue to support the existing distributions of the bridge and, if some major issue is found, we may discuss how to fix it. We just can not distribute the actual bridge package at this time.

Please do not PM, IM or Email me with support questions.  You will get better and faster responses in the support boards.  Thank you.

Hi Kindred

Sorry about that bump. Me hitting Post too times on slow connection and forgot to check what happened. An Accident.  :'(

Thanks for answering and of course I will not stop using the Bridge. I also must say I respect your stand not distributing right now.

Thanks

It sounds like you've lost faith Orstio?  That's sad and understandable too. Please don't we all appreciate what you have done and are doing.

I lost out big time by having to switch this weekend. God only knows if I can bring what I had back? SMF is my forum software so I hope. (And I hope folks are reading this?) That SMF can form some portal of its own?

It makes complete sense to me having read a great deal of what has been said. You can add as many wish lists as you like but we all know we want something that does everything. I'm pretty sure the group can pull together its efforts and produce something over time should things go that way and I for one, think they should.

Best.

QuoteI don't understand the technicalities surrounding all of this but suing is being mentioned I take a walk to a fence and sit on it for a while or build again.

That sums up my sentiments as well, which is why I have been working on bridging with other CMSs for the time being.

QuoteI refuse to take sides it is not in my interest as an end user to do so. But I truly hope something happens soon since my SMF in one location gets put on ice this coming Friday. Thats a shame! :-(

Unfortunately, I seriously doubt there will be any resolution within the next month.  I'd be surprised if anything worthwhile comes before Xmas.

Not at all.  This has strengthened my resolve to work with CMSs who are willing to accept that extensions are not derivative works and allow proprietary third party extensions.

The situation has also brought me into closer contact with a member of the Community Builder development team, and I can say that there is a good chance that there will be some CB extensions for the Mambo-SMF bridge in the future.

As far as I am concerned, a lot of good has come out of this.

Will we see an updated Joomla 1.0.13 bridge?

Orstio

Not likely.  If I can't distribute a bridge for Joomla 1.0.12, I can't for 1.0.13 either.

Aravot

So what's going to happen to us, those that have Joomla and SMF bridged.

Orstio

Well, you can continue to run on the existing software you have in the short term.

Long term, I suggest looking at other CMSs.  There are extensive demos here (look on the left hand side bar, in the CMS Demo Menu):

http://www.opensourcecms.com

Let me know if there are any that catch your fancy, and I'll put it on my (ever-growing!) list of things to do.

I am waiting for Mambo 4.7 than I'll decide (one thing I don't understand why is their SVN closed to public, what type of openness is that)

Are we allowed to modify and redistribute the Joomla SMF bridge?

Orstio

QuoteI am waiting for Mambo 4.7 than I'll decide (one thing I don't understand why is their SVN closed to public, what type of openness is that)

I believe they are waiting for the public beta before opening the SVN. Currently, only the SVN for 4.6.x is open.  If you want clarification as to why the SVN for 4.7 is currently closed, you are best to ask them about it.

QuoteAre we allowed to modify and redistribute the Joomla SMF bridge?

No.  That would be a violation of both the SMF license and also the Joomla interpretation of the GPL.

Aravot

I am sorry Orstio just to clarify you mean no one is allowed to write a bridge for Joomla SMF even from scratch, like Joomlahacks.

Orstio

QuoteI am sorry Orstio just to clarify you mean no one is allowed to write a bridge for Joomla SMF even from scratch, like Joomlahacks.

Well, I thought your original question was whether somebody could modify bridge 1.1.7 and redistribute that.  That was what I was answering.

Joomlahacks is a bad example, actually.  It is in violation of GPL that is not at all related to Joomla.  It is released under the GPL, but, requiring end users to pay for an encryption key to remove the text "Joomla Bridge by JoomlaHacks.com" restricts at least one of the Four Holy Freedoms.

For clarification of this question, I am going to suggest you be patient.  We have yet to make an official announcement on the matter, and I think when we do it will answer your question.

You are not wrong, that is what I originally meant.

I have no problem with the bridge it is working fine (I am using the unreleased version  ;)) and can wait, my only concern is for the future J1.5 and SMF 2.0.

I am sure you'll come up with something.

First Thanks for all your work Orstio!! ;D

I want to be clear about one more thing? The official clarification, will this happen soon and for shore before Xmass right? Just asking?

I still have to face the fact that Joomla CMS is the best and SMF is the best Board system and they won't play together in the future. Sad. :'( :'(

Then I have to look for second best.... :(

Hi Antracit.

Most of our people are either annoyed or very confused after I moved over. SMF is not dead for me it is the best out there so far as I can see but for this project I needed to keep Joomla so other admins didn't get lost which of course saves me weeks of explaining everything.

I've tried Mambo and found that some extensions don't work there so that put me off doing this. One fabulous feature mambo has however is a self contained backup utility.

I may yet swing back I am not certain the Joomla forum is ok but not busy enough for my liking where as Mambo seems very friendly indeed.
