Category on left hand side?

I am loving this forum to start with!  It has super easy to install and get going.  Kudos to all who contributed to the making of it!

I have a client who would like to have a separate nav bar with all categories on the left hand side of the forum.  Can this be easily accomplished?  Is there a template out there already for this that I have missed?

Is there a way to have the index page different from he rest of the forum along with this nav bar?  I do have some experience in making things looking the way I want and usually can shift things around but I would have no idea how to get that going.  Any help or advice would be awesome!
