why?   We have it in the joomla and mambo bridges... and the first thing I have seen everyone do is turn the option OFF

I know nothing of these bridges. I, like the majority, have a standard SMF installation.

I know the PURPOSE of the function...  I'd like to know why you think it should be a feature and not just a mod.

Firstly, I know a lot of people who use it, on their forum.

Secondly, the mod's no longer being supported by the author.

The mod in its current form does work with 1.1.2/3.  Read the second to last page and look at my posts.

I have it working on 1.1.3, too.

It's damned useful, particularly when your forum's for an online game's alliance, as ours is.
