He could probably get where he wants via the SEX ON REGISTRATION MOD  (no, its not as great as it sounds ) its just a mod that allows you to specify SEX (male or female) when registering.

he would also incorporate code from the MEMBERGROUP ON REGISTRATION MOD

I believe there is a mod that can make some profile fields mandatory on registration too.

next, he could create two membergroups then have a little script that moves members to the appropriate member group*
He will know which file to write to, by using the code in the MEMBERGROUP mod.

Finally, he can have some code that people can only change their member group if it is BLANK (to prevent people from doing sex changes all day)

sex changes. not to laugh at the idea but it does sound funny if it were real. how would u call that person? amphibious?

back to topic:
yeah, i think the membergroup is a good workaround if not specifying the gender in the profile. but then let's just hope there's no inconsistency where a person with a male gender is in the female membergroup.

I think it would be "ambidextrous"?

you would, I think, still need a membergroup 'cause the SMF doesnt allow you to say "only allow this Profile Field=??? to enter this board"

however, you can do it by membergroup.

so generally, anything you want to do regarding the forums, member groups are the best way to go

for the path I would use to implement this, you would need the MEMBERGROUP on REGISTRATION mod as well.


here is the overview.

Members specify their gender on signup
as a result, they are made members of the appropriate member group.

(second mod, profile edits)
every time a profile is edited, this code is run which moves the member to the appropriate membergroup.

at first I thought I would have no need for this, but typing it out, I see it could have special validity/utility  as a "PROFILE FIELD to MEMBERGROUP" type mod.. I'll give it some more thought!
