Did you or your host make any changes to your forum recently? Any changes at all....

Are you using English or some other languages on the forum?

If I remember correctly, another member had exactly the same issue and I fixed that by converting his forum to UTF-8.

Is this issue solved or do you still require assistance?

are we talking about this symbol: # or the sign for the british pound?

If the latter - are you using UTF-8 or have you converted to UTF-8?

First, make a database backup. After that, convert your forum database to UTF-8 in SMF Admin > Forum Maintenance.

Also be sure to upload the smf_1-1-3_english-utf8 language pack after the conversion and select this language in Admin > Server Settings > Default Forum Language. The English UTF-8 language pack can be downloaded from this page:
http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?languages;lang=english

I have noticed that English and English-utf8 both appear as English in some SMF installations. In this case, be sure to try both entries and see which of them displays the British pound character correctly.

The language pack won't matter. You just need to ensure that the database encoding matches the output encoding.

I converted the database to UTF-8, installed the UTF-8 language file and all is well.

I know that this is an old topic, but could someone confirm whether all Modifications language packs need updating to UTF8 versions after this conversion?
