If cpanel is eating that much then it is possible.

It seems to be the inbuilt stats for SMF, when they run everything grinds to a halt.

I may be mistaken Ben but there is a tick box in the Admin, Features and Options, Track daily statistics.  I think we had other stats programs running at one time webtrends I think but we had to stop that as it too locked up the service.

AFAIK those aren't compiled at any certain time, i believe they're cumulatively stored in the database.  I could be wrong though.

SMF doesn't have any stats that run on a timed basis.  I'd think that since its something happening at timed intervals and not ALL the time -- that only infers that its not the smf stats causing it.

Like i said, i have seen things like cPanels logrotate and stat crunching operations take out servers before :P

As BlackMage said, they are worked out on the fly, it's the stuff in "More Stats" such as number of posts / topics per day.
