Well this is the issue i am trying to convert a phpbb forum which is currently on a different server from the server where i am planning to install smf. So now what am i supposed to give the path of the phpbb and smf i have installed the smf on

www.mydomainname.com

where as the old phpbb forums is a subdomain of some other domain and it is on a different server .. i tried all possiblities but couldnt get it to work :( can some one assist me with this :)

The best way is to dump the phpBB database into SMF's. Then copy phpBB configuration files into SMF's directory in FTP.
You can then convert with no problem. (You wont need to type different paths for SMF and phpBB)

Hi there

In order to convert your phpbb forum to smf, you must install smf in the same server as your phpbb forum. Because for the conversion to work, smf must have access to the database of the phpbb forum.

For more info on how to convert to smf, please have a look at the online manual

He doesnt have to install SMF to the same server as phpBB. He can do it as I told above; just with copying the phpBB database and the configuration files into SMF's server. Thats all.

how can i dump that phpbb database to smf can u please guide me coz i am doing this for the first time :)

Elmacik

Go to phpMyAdmin where your phpBB forum is installed.
Select the phpBB database from the left menu.
Then at the top, you'll see "Export" button. Click.
Select the MySQL compatibility to MySQL 4
Uncheck "Add auto increment" option.
Scroll down, choose to save as a zipped file.
Click "Go" button.
It will start to download the phpBB database to your computer.

When it finishes, go to phpMyAdmin in SMF's server.
Select SMF database, click "Import" button near the "Export" one.
Now upload the database yıou newly downloaded to your computer.

Then copy config.php, config.inc and config directories of phpBB to the SMF's director, if they exist.

You can now run the converter script.

well i managed to move my phpbb forums to the new server and now i am trying to do the conversion process.

Thanks to Elmacik for your support and this is the error now when i am trying to convert the phpbb to smf

Sorry, the database connection information used in the specified installation of SMF cannot access the installation of phpBB2. This may either mean that the installation doesn't exist, or that the MySQL account used does not have permissions to access it.

The error MySQL gave was: SELECT command denied to user 'masala_smf1'@'localhost' for table 'phpbb_users'

What am i supposed to do ?

babjusi

You should give the smf user, i.e. 'masala_smf1' full access and permissons to the phpbb database

chillingcafe

ty babjusi ... i could continue with that and now one more error

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: copy_dir() in /home/masala/public_html/masala/convert.php(665) : eval()'d code on line 20

what is this ?

babjusi

Did you upload the sql. convert file as well?

chillingcafe

if u talking about the phpbb2_to_smf.sql , then yeah i did

Elmacik

Is the convert.php file you are using, new?
Where did you download from?
Home of Elmacik

chillingcafe

i downloaded that from the converters page in download section .. is there any new version ?

Elmacik

The version in the download section doesnt have the code you have in yours.. :s
I think we should wait for JayBachatero to answer this.
Because he changed some codes in convert.php and he uploaded into several topics, its a bit untidy. So I dont know which one is for what..

Hi there!

I have exactly the same error!!
QuoteSorry, the database connection information used in the specified installation of SMF cannot access the installation of phpBB2. This may either mean that the installation doesn't exist, or that the MySQL account used does not have permissions to access it.

The error MySQL gave was: SELECT command denied to user 'progtheaforum'@'10.0.78.40' for table 'forum_users'

But I don't know how to give permission to this user?

And the problem is the sql prefixs in my PHPBB database are the same ("forum") that in my SMF, so it doesn't work... I don't know how I could change the prefix...

Thanks
