improved one-click ban

perhaps a ban button by a poster's name while logged in as admin, with option for "delete all threads and replies" associated with said user.

If there's already a mod like this, let me know - couldn't find anything that quite matched this feature, and it really should be there by default.

I completely agree with this. Going to the ban list and adding triggers can get quite devious when you have an active forum with quite a few offenders.

Whats wrong with clicking on view profile and then on "Ban this user". It's only one extra click to what you are asking.

Also same with deleting posts, profile > Delete this account > Remove posts made by this member:
Liverpool FC Forum with 14 million+ posts.

But I think it should be default where it's just a one click ban. Someone make a mod or smf 2.0 developers make this defult!

littlefeather

whether this becomes a mod or is made into a feature by default, this is a good idea, and perhaps one more feature/function could be added to this..

Lets say you have banned someone who has been a pretty decent poster until recently...maybe the last 8 or ten posts ( which is what got him banned)...

How about include an option to only delete the last 5, 10, all (or choose how many)...

Bad idea. First, it's too hair-trigger. Think AOL and its "report this email as spam" button. Clicking that button instantly gets your whole server (by IP address) blacklisted, without any investigation or further complaints, even if the stupid AOLuser thinks it means "unsubscribe me from this newsletter"!

Second, you would want to have some sort of confirmation page (and click) anyway, in case you accidentally clicked the ban button. So, you're up to two clicks anyway. What's the big hardship with two clicks instead of one?

Andy134

Well, it should ban the user's account. Then, if they want to further keep them away, go into the admin cp and ban their "IP", "email" or "hostname". That way it doesn't blacklist their entire IP and/or range.

If we make it that easy, we'll have lots of "I accidentally banned someone" topics. It's not that much effort to click a few more times to can someone.

It's relatively easy to delete the last x posts from a user - go to their profile, click the "show last posts of this user" link, and delete away. It's not as fast, but it works.

The problem with a one click banning (besides accidents that will occur) is that we'd have to start making assumptions about what type of ban to use.  Should it be a full ban that never expires?  Post ban that expires in a day?  Should it ban by username only or by email?  What about IP?

IMO these questions are better left up to the admin to decide so they can manage their forum how they want to.

i find the current ban user process is very confusing because we need to activate the trigger. I like to suggest that when we ban a user, default ban user name trigger is selected. We can add other trigger if we need more control.

Oldiesmann

What if you don't want to ban the username? Then you have to remove the trigger first before adding the one you do want.

correct. I assume that user name should be the most commonly ban that most user uses. If anyone want any other type of ban, they can choose to edit it thr the trigger. There are so many diff choice, so many "what if" around . So i propose "default" ban setting to be set as user name.

Jalkson

I actually thought about this when I was working on a custom theme.  I decided against it after some thought.  Banning is a lot more tempting when the link/button is staring you in the face with every post a user makes.

I don't see any issue with having to through profile, or the admin panel.

In my opinion, having it as an optional feature (being able to turn it on/off in the admin panel) might not be so bad, but probably not worth the effort.

Oldiesmann

I still think it's a bad idea. We don't want to make banning too easy or we'll get lots of people accidentally banning members.

For the record I agree that a one-click ban is a bad idea, but I would say that a huge majority of bans at least include the username.

Sorry if i did not express myself correctly here. I am not referring to one click ban but improvement on the current process.
Going thr profile click on "ban this user", fill up the detail in "ban list->add new ban". When i click add, a default ban user name trigger should be created.

Oldiesmann

So that saves you one extra click. I still don't see it as a useful option. What about those of us that want to ban users without banning their username? Username bans are only good for people who are actually members of the forum - if I want to ban a spammer before deleting their account, a username ban won't do me any good.
