attachment subdirectories

i'm trying to do some maintenance on my attachments, however the FTP limit on files is 2000 in a directory, after that the default setting is to truncate the results.  as far as i'm aware, this is a server setting, and many server admins will be unwilling to lift this number as it opens them to easier DOS attacks.

given that each attachment is prepended with a number, would it not be logical to put these attachments into subdirectories which make them easier to browse by the owner?

This is a serious problem.

I had to change YaBBSM to create subdirectories (in the directory "attachments") automatically for each year, month and day of insertion attach. The code is very simple and improves backup time.

I am evaluating migration from YaBBSM to SMF and I can not do without a solution to this problem.

I agree some changes need to be made to the attachment system for people who have large amount of files.
