Opening SSI links externally/ within other pages

I searched and learned how to redirect users to single pages, like login/logout/ register, etc

I provide links to these pages via module in Joomla, and after a little modification, they open their content wrapped in my joomla template.

My next step, and what I cannot seem to find an answer for is how to wrap things like "recent topics" or other SSI functions that direct a user to many different threads/posts/content pages.

So when  a user clicks on the most recent topic items (located on my Joomla frontpage), these topics would open wrapped in my template, rather than opening a fullscreen copy of the smf index.

The only solution I can see at this point is to perform the manual SMF/Joomla integration- then the SSI link target would simply replace the forum index, and appear nestled in my J! template

but I don't know if this is the best way to go about it.

I thought I saw a thread that had a function that caused all SSI links to redirect to a wrapped page, but I cannot find it now, maybe I dreamed it.

Any suggestions?
