Message Excerpt in notification possible?

Hi.

I haven't installed SMF yet, I just have a quick question that I can't see answered from my search.

When new topic notifications are sent to subscribers, is it possible to include an excerpt of the message or the full message itself?

From the examples I have seen, only a generic notification is sent and the recipient has to visit the site to see what the message content is.

Welcome to SMF.

There should be a way to do that with some code editing. The purpose of the email notification is to let the users know someone replied to id. They should really visit the link to see that reply and any other new replies after that one.

If you still want to be able to accomplish this, we can move it over to the Mod Requests board.

Hi Kevin and thanks for the reply.

I agree with you in principle, but in my experience, many topics are just not descriptive enough to make a decision wether to visit the forum to read more or not. And so time constrains often make me skip potentially interesting topics.

I plan to use SMF with MODx, as hxxp:www.modxcms.com [nonactive] uses it for their own forum and it seems to be well integrated. It is also my hope if a solution to this is possible, hxxp:modxcms.com [nonactive] could adopt it.

For me, an important possible use of this is on such a software support forum to quickly determine if the topic posted is an issue I can support or move on to any other topic in my knowledge area.
Also, for learning purposes, following interesting topics without needing to log in, only logging in when you need to subscribe to a new topic or post, and so forth.

In fact, it is about saving time in a busy day.

So it would be great if receiving the message content could be a user preference.

I guess this can be a helpful feature if the topic is not viewable by the public.

No problem. I'll move it over to Mod Requests. Hopefully someone will be able to come up with the code to do this. Give it some time....

Well, I downloaded and installed the latest version (1.1.4). Thought I'd see if I could code this myself.

And lo and behold, the option to do this is right there already!

First one needs to disable 'Don't allow post text in notifications?' in the admin.
Then enable 'When sending notification of a reply to a topic, send the post in the email (but please don't reply to these emails.)' in the profile.

That's it.

So there is no need for a mod after all.
