Admin Log In As User

I have used this modification with much sucess when users report errors that I cannot reproduce or see using a vB forum.
This modification allows any admin that you set in admin permissions, to log in as any user. You have to go to the user's profile page and there will be a link to 'Log In As This User'. Also, there is a link the drop down menu in the Admin Control Panel Member Manager. If you are logged in as another user, you will get a message on top of the forum saying, 'You are currently logged in as another user. Click here to log back into your account.' When you select it, you are then logged back as the admin profile. It does not record you logging in. Also, others will not see you as online.

no... another violation/lie mod...

If I want to test things from a user's point, I will set up my own user account, or ask the user for their password. Using a mod like this means you could pretend to be any user... thus making anything said by any user suspect and making anything you say as admin a likely lie.

Also... post these in the right location. This (and the others) were mod requests, not feature requests.

Why are suggesting mods where you are lying to your members. What is your forum?

To be honest, I think this would make a decent debugging tool IF:

  • You couldn't post as the member. Right as the post is about to be submitted, it would have a message saying posting is disabled when logged in as another user. Perhaps have a checkbox or something that says "Post this under your own account instead?".
  • You can't view the user's PMs or send PMs with the user. The PM page can be shown, with perhaps pms that you and only you sent to the member so that you can tell the member is really able to view pms, but when a PM is about to be sent you would get a similar message as above.
  • As you already said, the user would not be logged as online.
  • Buddies not shown. Only reason is because this is one thing admins cannot see normally.

Editing profile values would be okay because admins can edit them anyway.

Indeed, I figure this is more useful for members in certain groups who perhaps claim something is up and you don't see anything wrong in terms of how things are set in the admin panel. Although even then Show Permissions in the member's profile and Generate Reports in the admin panel work rather well. Which is why I think this would perhaps be useful for some as a mod, though definitely not needed as a default feature.

i had a phpBB3  account and it let you "test users permissions" which copied over everything they could do, untill you were done testing it out, and then you just clicked the "restore permissions" button....maybe thats what they want?
