Hello, I am considering installing SMF for a forum, and I am doing some homework.  I know less than nothing about SMF so bear with me if I say something INCREDIBLY stupid!

I want a very simply themed forum not unlike this one here, differing only by maybe having a photograph (with forum title on it) as a background header, like where the simple machines header is on this forum.  That's it.  So my question is...  can that be accomodated easily by a relatively non-technical user by simply inserting a photo of the required dimensions in the respective area.. or will that require a more technical approach, or God forbid the installation of a theme I'll need to get designed?

Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

most themes including the default have an area where you can set what image to use in the admin CP.  If that doesn't quite suit your needs though, you can edit the html behind the image as well.

admin > current theme > header logo url.  is the area on the left.

the area on the right is in /Themes/default/index.template.php, if you search for 'smflogo.gif' or replace that image with a different one, you can change whats there.

It really depends on what you want to do with it.

Thank you so much... that actually sounds like exactly what I'm looking for - and the HTML editing would be OK too... I'm just not a PHP guru.

Thanks you for that input!

One more quick question that arises out of your post...  your reply seems to indicate there's a couple of "areas" in the header.  I'm not sure yet that I would utilize multiple areas, I envisaged one long photo stretching from one side to the other... is that do-able?

Yes, that is possible, but you'd need to make some manual edits.

Yes, that is possible, but you'd need to make some manual edits.

Can I assume those edits would be HTML edits?

They would be around PHP code, but no direct PHP edits.

Many thanks,  when I get the site up, if I have other questions on this issue, I'll get back to you.

OK...  I got the SMF forum up and running today.  Installation was a breeze, and upgraded to 1.1.4 quickly and easily.  All configuration problems were resolved by doing a search of this topic.

Now last night I asked how to put a picture in the header.  I figured that out... well at least almost.  I put a picture (1350px by 150px) in the header, and it's pretty much what I want, and stretches across the top of the forum.  However there is a little SMF logo to the right which got pushed off-screen, and if you scroll right you can see it.  How do I remove that logo?  I did search this board for that info but couldn't find anything, perhaps my search words were wrong.

Thanks

search index.template.php for smflogo.gif.

remove that line, the <td> above it, and the </td> below it.  Make sure any '; stay intact.

I just noticed... for some reason other users online are not showing up in the Online Users box at bottom of main page.

What's up with that?

metallica48423

not sure, could you start a new topic and give as much info as possible?  Thanks :)
