are my sql backups working right?

I have 73 members, and nearly 20000 posts (in 1107 topics)... and I am only getting 656Kb sized backups.

I used to get about 1.2 megs earlier on.  When I did the forum maintenance... it was dropped to 500Kb for the longest time.   Then one day, It was about 5-6 megs large and was like that for a few weeks (even while I was doing the forum maintenance).  But  the last 2 weeks... the backup size has been down to 600-656 Kb.

Is there something wrong?

thanks for your help.

Do you have shell access or can you activate crontabs on your server? If so you can dump the database with a script. If not ask your host to pass you a database dump and move your host asap after you got the complete dump.

You might try my create_backup.php I'm creating, but it's not totally done being tested...

Why move my host?  I can get to the shell, yes.

If you have shell access then you can use the shell commands or the shell scripts which are listed in this thread:

I understand that... but I am more curious of why you said "move your host"

why is that?

I only wrote that in case you haven't shell access or crontabs. Since you wrote you cannot dump the full database with php. It is important that you can dump the full forum database somehow. If you have shell access everything should be fine.

If you want that, you'll need to ask your host to increase the allowed memory_limit....

-[Unknown]

[Unknown]

Okay, you can *try* finding the following in Sources/DumpDatabase.php:

@set_time_limit(600);

Below it, add:

@ini_set('memory_limit', '128M');

Any help?

I'll try this shortly.  I appreciate the help!  I am sure everything will be cool once I get  to the dedicated server though.

can I ask... what will the effect of this be?
IE will there be any slow down?  or any negative effects?

If it works, it will take a very long time, but you'll get the whole backup.

-[Unknown]

bluevoodu

it did not work.... what other solutions are there?

Thanks for your help!  I do appreciate it.

You'll want it increased to about the size of your database, I'm afraid.

The DB size is 50 megs  that doesn't seem like a big amount of memory....   :-\

I'll give that a shot.

well... I have a problem, I can only have 8 megs at this time.

Once I get to my dedicated server, there won't be any problems.... but until then..... what is the best solution?

I gotta get a good backup... Its been..... FOREVER since I was able to get a good one.

I have been backing up my database via my ssh now.... but I have moved to a dedicated server with 1 gig of ram.... and I am still encountering the same problem with trying to download the SQL file from the SMF admin panel.  I only get about 1 meg done and then it quits.

Can this still be a ram issue?

It could be a max_execution_time/memory_limit issue.

andrea

It is *not* an issue. A 50 MB database usually cannot be dumped any longer with the admin menu or phpMyAdmin because of timeout problems. That is why it *must* be dumped with ssh or crontab.

If I were to set all my timeouts hugely high in my browser, Apache, MySQL, PHP, and increase the memory limits for all of the above, it would go through.  This combination of settings, however, is hard to coax together, so that's why I prefer ssh myself as well.

-[Unknown]

bluevoodu

yeah... I almost prefer the ssh now anyway lol

but... my DB is only 20 megs.. and I am on a ded server with 1024 memory...
I just wanted to report back that I didn't think it was a mem issue because I am on my own server with more than enough ram... 80 gig hard drive..etc

I appreciate your help

Thanks,
BV

It's not a memory issue, it's a memory limit issue.  PHP, Apache, and MySQL all have hard limits you can set to make it such that they don't use too much memory.... and if those limits are too low, it's nearly impossible to generate backups the way the administration center does currently.
