importing tables from sql backup...

I'm changing my hosting for one of my smf boards and going to run it on a personal dedicated server but i'm having a few little issues.

The site is up and running fine on my dedicated suse box, and so much faster but the posts are old. I want to do the major overhaul to the site on the dedicated box as it's faster to accomplish (takes forever on current host) BUT I need to import the latest board posts, topics etc. Not the gallery or arcade as they will be updated on the new box...

I have access to phpmyadmin both on the current host, and it's installed on the dedicated server. I export the tables from the live site and try to import to the dedicated and I get the error "table already exists" or something to that effect.

I just want to import the latest active data... Can anybody fill me in on how this is accomplished? I know i'm doing something wrong.

I am not sure I understood you. You say that the site is up and running at the new host but the posts are old and you need to import the latest board posts, topics etc? Can you elaborate a bit more please?

For moving hosts have a look at this topic

I'm still in the testing phases right now with the dedicated server, want to make sure everything is going to run the way I want it to. I still have the internet host running my live site and it will for at least another week, the dedicated server's database  and messages are a week old.

I'm planning a major overhaul to the site but I want to make all the changes on the dedicated server as it will be much quicker. Next week when im ready to go live with it, I just want to import all the latest messages from my internet host but not overwrite all the changes I make on the dedicated server.

Make sense? Thanks.

Tried dropping these tables from my test server and importing the same tables from the live site, didn't work... How are these tied together?

When the time comes to make the change, you can go about it in 2 ways in my opinion.  First of all make a very thorough backup of your forum files and database. Second, go to the new host and create the database with the same info like that of the old host. Log in to your favorite ftp client and upload all your forum files to your pc, then re-upload them to the new server. Next import the database throgh phpmyadmin, from your old host to the new one and then run the repair_settings.php tool which you will find at the download section under ''Tools''. Don''t forget to delete it after you are done. In this way, you won''t loose any mods that you might have.

The second way is after you have done the backup and created the database at the new host with the same info like that of the old host, install the latest version of smf and then simply import the database and then run the repair_settings.php tool I told you abobe.

P.s. What version of smf do you currently have?

Try to drop all the tables and then import the database again

One of us is missing something, maybe it's me.

I have 2 copies of my site running, one is live and running on asmallorange webhosting. They are really starting to suck as a host so I have created a dedicated server. The dedicated server is up and running right now, i'm posting to simplemachines.org from the console. The database that i'm working with at the console is a week old. I don't care that it's a week old right now, I just want the site so I can make all the changes now.

I'm trying to save cutover time by making all of my additions and changes to this "not live" dedicated server. I'm upgrading the arcade and adding 50+ games. Changing the gallery from smf to coppermine plus many more options. I do NOT want to do this to the live site hosted on smallorange as it takes forever.

When I am ready to bring the dedicated server online and take the old site down, I only want the current messages from the smallorange host imported, nothing else.

If I drop the database and all the tables on the dedicated server, i'm back working from scratch. I don't want to do that. Trying to make life a little easier on myself here and minimize downtime.

If I can't do this then i'm stuck making the cutover and all the upgrades and changes in one night. All I want is the current messages and pm's from the live site, nothing else.

Nevermind, was just me being stupid. Managed to get the messages  imported and all is well. On with the upgrades.
