I think that one may only adjust the sources so it may not need manual edits.

Yep SMF 2.0 will attempt to install mods for all themes

will new 2.0 themes have to be made by authors ? or existing themes will work just the same without probs ?

The installer will attempt to upgrade themes so they should work but any new features will need to be added in

A couple of things I can think of at the moment (there are probably a lot more):

-- SMF 2.0 has a global menubar in Subs.php. Your custom theme would not be updated to use this.
-- Because of the above you would not get a moderation button appearing on your custom theme
