Hello, i am afraid once my forum gets going it will get hacked and i will loose everything that people has worked on.

how do i back up peoples post etc,,,,, so if i get hacked i can install it back??

admin > forum mainenance > backup (on the page)

Once you get so big though, you will probably need to use PhpMyAdmin to do the backup (What is phpMyAdmin?)

it is advised that you test the backups on a test board to ensure they will restore correctly come crunch time.

thank you very much, the last time i tried the backup my forum was brand new with 16 post by me. the file downloaded so fast "im on dialup", i just couldn't understand how it whent so fast.

you mean i can test the backup on another smf forum??

thank you.

how do you upload the file to the forum???

SMF's database is very small to start with. With only a few posts, it will download very quickly.

To upload, you would want to use a tool like phpMyAdmin or the restore script in the downloads area here.

just curious, how big is big?

ok, what do you do to use this? upload it to the forum like a theme?? and will it change my theme?

or am i going to have to read a book on this lol.

Thank you

erm... no, a database backup isn't a theme.  You can't restore it from within the admin panel, you need to use a program such as phpmyadmin to restore it (What is phpMyAdmin?)...  chances are if you REALLY need to restore your database you can't get into the SMF admin CP anyways :P.

i'll grab a link for you to something on restoring the database when i get home

Restoring a Database - one way

create_backup.php/restore_backup.php
- another way

if your server has cPanel, you can also use it to create and restore databases
