Switching from wrapped to unwrapped installation - url rewriting?

Hi,

i'm currently about to switch back from a in joomla wrapped smf to the stand-alone sollution on both, yet i would like to have all the old links to still be refering to the right topics etc.

so a path like:
/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=3113.0
becomes
forum/index.php?topic=3113.0

does that work with mod-rewrite or is there a better sollution, that maybe also returns the right status code (301 - permanentely moved) ?
