Just starting out, hints?

Ok, I have had my own forums for about half a year now that is hosted with phpBB or something like that. Now, it hasn't died, but the posting has almost stopped. The only active thing is my chat. I have a decent amount of members that would love to stay at my site but they just don't post and my site is sort of a branch off of a huge site...

Now my question is, that I want to make a new forum/move my forum to a Simplemachines forum. And what should I do to start out with other than the basic things? I already have someone to host it for me, and I know how to make boards and do all that stuff. But what about skins or buttoms and rank images?

So yes, have any hints for me while I am starting anew to a new kind of forum provider? I'd gratelly appreciate it, and I hope my post isn't too hard to understand...
