I have a unique need that I think SMF can handle but I'm not sure how to do it. I'm brand new to SMF and have looked thru the setup and permissions and cannot figure out how to do this.

I want users to be able (after registering) to be able to create a subboard in a board and control access to who can read/write in it. they would be able to have multiple sub-boards in this area and have unique access for each one. I want this to be as automated as possible so admin does not have to approve or create.

I also want other boards that have open access to all registered users.

Is there a way to give registered users this level of control and at the same time limit another area?

Not with SMF in general. You seem to be looking at more of one of the multi-forum scripts. There are a few out there and I haven't tried any so I'm not able to recommend any at this time.
