How easy is it to add this?

Depends on how comfortable you'll be tinkering with a template. I'd suggest you start by trying the Curve Theme, as it already has a side-menu, so its easier to figure-out what you need to change (see here for a simple example)

Nice Forum. I thought that the side menu was available and could be added to any site. Not sure if it's a mod or separate sofware.

Technically it can be, a few lines of code and you would have one but youd probably need someone with more experience than me to do it, but im sure you could even find the code in one of the themes if you wanted to.
