SMF Version: SMF 1.1.4
My forum has lots of problems with slow loading and no loading at all.

My host says it's the programming I use, aka SMF thats the problem. Which I doubt, because it's running just fine right now.

Could things like this be caused by a big database?
I run a Roleplay forum, and finished roleplays are put in a closed board as archive, this makes the database quite big I'm guessing.

And I have a few mods;
Mod Name Version
1. Active Members In Topic 1.5
2. Gender On Registration 1.0
3. Show Multiple Badges (Aka Stars)
4. Display Signatures only once per page 1.0
5. YouTube BBC Tag (XHTML Compliant) 1.0
6. SMF Shoutbox 1.16
7. Custom Profile Field Mod 3.16
8. Invite 1.14
9. SMF 1.0.12 / 1.1.4 / 2.0 b1.1 Update 1.0
10. TinyPortal 0.983

How big is your forum?

We try to make SMF as fast as possible. But when your board gets big enough, we can't handle the server limitations itself. This just means its time for a bigger hosting package that gives your more cpu and ram

Who is your host? 99.9% of the time, if they say your scripts are what is causing the trouble, the host is actually to blame...

Looking at your mods, if they are working properly, for the most part they aren't the biggest resource users.

However I have seen a couple of Shoutboxes cause slowness and other issues when not working properly. (eg calling to update/refresh too often or constantly)
Try temporarily disabling it and seeing whether it gives you any improvement.

But like has been suggested above.  Blaming the scripts is often used to excuse overselling on the part of hosts.

It isn't that big.. just around 80 members, and the database backup I made is around 7mb. Though in the summer, it ate a gb bandwidth a day.

Also, my host is 'E-dentify.com' a dutch host just 20kms away from me =p

Has things improved?

Can you upload a status.php? You can get that from the stickies at the top of this board.

I have no idea how I can get the status.php, havn't seen it in the stickies...

Things are only getting worse, my forum is down more then it's up, and my host said my account is far above avarage on serverload. While I only have the forum and a wiki.

I can't even get on my forum right now to check anything, and the weird thing is, the only things that don't work during this 'downtime' is the SMF and Wiki, normal html things or simple php does work.

I do hold an archive of old RP's which makes up a lot of database, would it help if I got rid of those?

Thank you, uploaded the status thing, but I have no idea what exactly to do with it ^^;

Though; Opened vs. Open tables:
(table_cache)  23297.2188 (should be <= 80)   Seems a bit bad >>

I suggest you contact your host.

Even status.php takes too much time to load.

    Please do not PM me with support requests unless I invite you to.

Try again, it's down when the forum is down, check http://www.twisted-spoon.com, it doesnt take down simple html while the forum and wiki do go down.

Thats funny, it looks like they blocked you from getting the server stats/info as well... that information (loads etc) would have been to useful i suppose.

They definitely need to increase their table cache size...  Since i doubt they will do this, i would reccommend finding a new host.

Sadly, I'm stuck to them until november. So the table thing isn't something I can fix but something they did wrong?

Could you explain it a bit more so I can try and ask them to increase the size?

metallica48423

Ask them to increase the thread_cache_size value in my.cnf for mysql
