Hmm; just trying to think back if there was a mod like this or not. Have you checked the mod site for one yet. ??? I believe I did hear something about this awhile ago.

Old Lynx

no I haven't !

I'll go check and come back here :)

Old Lynx

Hi there

I checked, but couldn't find anything ! :(

Bigguy

I can move this to a more appropriate board for you were it will get better attention if you like. ???

You want a board to redirect? or a category?
Boards can be done with http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=38

Old Lynx

I want a guest to see the catagories under the [ Sharing ] by "see" I mean be able to view the name of the catagory ONLY. (e.g. Movies) BUT when he clicks  on Movies (I mean the guest) I want him to be taken to the registration page where he needs to fill the form.

karlbenson

So like
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=610

But instead of seeing the login or register page, you want them to be redirected to the action=register page

Old Lynx

Yessss ! that is right

Let's forget about the "action=register page", let us just redirect them to the login or register page.

How do I do it ?

Where do I start ??

Old Lynx

But the thing is I don't know how to instal mods :(

I've now downloaded the file [ View_Only_Boards_1.1.zip (8KB] [1317] ]

Now what do I do ?? How do I instal that Mod ? will this affect any of the posts on the forum ?

Old Lynx

I read that this Mod is only for the Default theme that came with SMF. I'm using SoftMC Blue ! does that mean this mod will mess up things for me :( :(

karlbenson

It shouldn't affect any posts.

Note however because you will be restricting access to your posts, spiders will not be able to spider your forum and so you will get a reduced number indexed pages in search engines.

To install a mod

Admin > Package Manager > Browse Packages
Upload it, apply.

The mod only installs on the default theme, so you may need to manually install some parts onto your theme.
You can grab the edits you need to make (theme changes)
by passing the mod through package parser like
http://sleepycode.com/PackageParser/index.php

Then edit the files and make the changes.

If you do not feel comfortable in doing that you could make a [free] or [paid] request for someone to do that for you in the Help Wanted section.

Thats relative. ;)

If you've never done it before it may be difficult at first.  But it is a useful process to learn how to manually edit code.

Backup both your files and your database before making any changes. Its better to be safer than sorry.
But like I said, there are people around here who would be willing to aid in installing mods, just checkout the link I posted above.

I haven't done it before :( but I want to learn how to do it

OK I'll backup all my stuff, then I'll post ....where do I post for help with this kind of things ?

I've just uploaded the rar file to that link you sent me ( http://sleepycode.com/PackageParser/index.php ) and I choose the option for [ editing a them to work for mod ]. and I clicked upload

Now I have all these red, black, and blue code writing !!

It says that I should replace this with that and ...etc

If I do the replacing will the Mod work then ?
