I put a simple sitemap.xml in my forum site through the Google sitemap maker.

I just wonder if a sitemap is necessary for an SMF site in connection with Search Engine Optimization.

It really can't hurt. If it will help get your site indexed and bring in traffic then it is fine.

It's no necessary at all. Chances are it probably won't even help.

They doesn't help SEO, they just let Google know where your pages are if it doesn't yet.
