That's cause I tend to never say no :P

The big problem is policing it. Basically, you either let people send attachments in private and risk them sending illegal materials to each other, or make it so admins can snoop on the files and hence break privacy of your users - neither of which are anywhere near ideal.
I'm only a half geek really...

Imagine someone registering, and spamming half your members with pornography.  I know people who would stop going to your forum if that happened.

A bit much, to be sure, but still...

In my case, I'd probably limit it to admins and moderators.  But, couldn't they upload it to their own server and spam people with it just as easy?

Anyone wanna make a mod?  ;D

I think attachments in PMs are a big waste of space... if they are friends and want to send files or whatever to each other, let them use email.

This is a feature in IPB 2.0 and if i didn't have to buy a license for it I would be using it now, I really like this feature and it should just be a mod and yes I would only have staff members send attachements.

Probably not. Someone might make a mod for this at some point, but I sincerely doubt it will be added as a regular feature.

Allowing single administrators?

With this feature, you either have to leave the attachments private (in which case someone could spam members without you knowing what they had sent until someone tells you), or you have to give admins the right to view all the attachments in someone's PMs, which many users might see as a violation of their privacy...

just allow admins and possibly other staff positions to send them but not a member. ;)

Amacythe

I say it again, use email or IM, not the board's PM system

Oldiesmann

I agree with AMA on this one. The problem is, if you let only the admins use it, other people will complain because they want to be able to enable it for all users, and then you have the privacy and spamming issues that I discussed a couple replies ago. I don't see how this could possibly be useful.

So an admin can send me an IM with an attachment but as a member I can't send one back to him ? ? ? ?
What's the point in that ?

I'd have to send it by email, so the whole exchange may as well be via email

the pm system is easier and more convienient. :P

I think if this was added as a MOD or a Feature, I would like to see it, it should be made where the Admin can turn it on or off. Allow the admin to take the Risk or not.  Very valid points that there are questions, but if we stop adding features to because of spammers, then we need to look who owns our sites and software.

I am not sure that some spammer would take the time to send out 465 PMs with a porn ad in it?  Even if so, whats to stop them from grabbing the emails from the site and using the emails users post.  Not adding a good and usefull feature because I could be abused isn't right.  Same idea with eliminating cars because people could use them in a robbery or Stop offering hightspeed connections to prevent Piracy.  While its not really a top desired thing, I see several reasons t could be used and desired.

Alternative idea could be to make it where if you have an Attachment, multiple recip will not work, unless sent from admin control panel.

verry good point, and you should also be able to set permissions to who can send attachements in pm's. ;)

This is an option in the permissions.  You can hide emails.
