Hello,
does exist any mod, that permits to encrypt the PMs and the POSTS?

And can they be accessible with a passphrase?

Thanks,
F.

Hey.
There isn't any existing mod to encrypt them.
As a feature request, at the end of the day I don't know what it would achieve.

Because it would be necessary for the passphrase used to be present in the database or in files in order so the posts could be decoded to be shown to users reading topics.  So anyone who ever got access to the server would easily be able to find and use the passphrase to decode everything in the database.

And of course there would be an increase in resources used/overhead. And depending how it worked, it would break the search function.

But maybe there is a way that it theoretically could be done that I'm not aware of?

I had the idea observing the function on Shroomery.org, a website php based, where a lot of people share their infos about growing active mushrooms, and there's the possibility to encrypt the  PM's with PGP, and the destinatary can open that message inserting his own PGP passphrase..

Indeed this has been discussed before and as Karl says that encryption keys must be stored on the server.

Lainaaand the destinatary can open that message inserting his own PGP passphrase..

Seems a waste of time. Any legal authority which needs the data is quite capable of cracking a pgp pasephrase.

Really you have two options.

1) Get a server in a country the doesn't forbid growing muchrooms and use https

2) See if there is a client side pgp extension for firefox / ie that you can use.

                              I recommend:
Namecheap (domains)
Fastmail (e-mail)
Linode (VPS)

PHPD҉irector

This would make SMF slower than it is, since most people don't need/want it i don't think there should be anything like this. Fair enough for a mod.

Indeed, there would be a performance hit. And even for people who would use it, there wouldn't be much if any benefit (as far as my understanding goes)
