Thought I'd provide some more info.

My joomla site is in /home/public_html and the board is in a folder named bod inside joomla.

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to edit the settings.php file in SMF as well?

no. You do not edit settings.php at all

Does the forum work, stand-alone?

Stand-alone it says it cannot connect to database. I was thinking the urls in the settings.php are causing this because they are pointing to C:\\xampp\\htdocs\\imp\\bod, shouldn't it be public_html\bod?

well, until you get the system running stand-alone, don't try to bridge it.

upload and run repair_settings.php

Still haven't fixed the problem. I think the problem is with the database names or the url to the forums.  I think the changes have to be made in the conguration.php in Joomla and the settings.php in the forums.

the error its returning when I try to access the forums stand alone is:

Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?tools
it's available in the download link at the top of this site.

If the site is now running (correctly) stand-alone, then you don't need to run repair_settings.php. repair_settings fixes path and db issues with your SMF Settings.php file.

If the site is now running correctly on stand-alone, take the path in the settings and use it as the path to forum in the bridge.

-note: removed your files, since they contain site specific data.
-note2: use [ code] tags, not [ quote] tags, next time...

Thanks a lot. Only one thing left now:
In the jsmf installation everything is now fine i.e the table prefix and the absolute path is now correct.

However the forum is not running even on standalone. Its still returning the same error that it could not connect to the database even though the table prefix I entered is the same as that in the bridge. Could it be usernames? On my comp I used a different username to mysql database.

Is the table prefix supposed to be "myjoomla db . smf db" ?? In the bridge it finally accepted the table prefix of smf to be the same of my joomla db!

ok.
once again... as I told you.

Get SMF running correctly as a stand-alone forum before you try to do any bridging. If it's not running stand-alone, then it will never run bridged.

second, what bridge are you using?  The bridge does not ask for table prefixes.......
