Set Permissions for a membergroup in two areas but they still have FULL access

Tom @ Your Sanctuary

Hello,

I did a search and have looked at some 40 -50 posts and couldn't find a solution.

I have SMF 1.1.4
With / Using Default theme
No mods have been installed

I am the administrator and I have created a survivors forum.

It has 5 basic categories:
General  (viewable by public)
Guests  (viewable by public)
Miscellaneous   (viewable by all members)
Secondary Survivors  (viewable by all members)
and three Categories for Survivors  -- ONLY (viewable by Survivors)

I have verified that Guests can not view boards beyond the General and Guests Categories.

I created the membergroup "Secondary Survivor Newbie".
On visible boards I selected "Check all" and then un-checked all the Survivors -- ONLY boards.

I have created a mockmember and set the Primary Membergroup as "Secondary Survivor Newbie".  Logged out and logged in as mockmember and I then I discovered that the mockmember could not only see the Survivors -- ONLY boards, but could post there as well.

I logged out and logged in as Admin and I then went to the Permissions and clicked on Permissions By Board and set ALL the Survivors -- ONLY boards from Global to Local and ensured that the access box for Secondary Survivor was unchecked for that board.

I logged out and logged in as mockmember and was still able to view and post to the Survivors -- ONLY boards.

I logged out and logged in as Admin and I then went to the Permissions and clicked on Permissions By Board and set ALL the Survivors -- ONLY boards from Global to Local and selected Modify for "Secondary Survivor Newbie" and unchecked each and every single box on the page.

I logged out and loggen as mockmember and mockmember can still view and post in the Survivors -- ONLY Categories and boards

As mockmember, I shouldn't be able to view, let alone post on these boards.

I hope that this is enough information.     I also hope that there is a solution to this problem.

Thank you in advance,
Tom @ Your Sanctuary

Without being able to have a look, in-situ, that might be a tricky one to crack. If you want me to have a look, for you, PM me the relevant details, giving me temporary admin access and I'll see what I can do, if you like.

Be sure to read this, first, though.

What permissions would you need?  Would you need FULL administrative access?
Or can I create a membergroup "TempAccess"?  (yeah this might be fun, LOL  :-\ ) and have you PM me with a requested username and password?

If it helps, one of the boards in the Survivors -- ONLY Category, called "My Story", is NOT visable to mockmember, but is to the Admin.

I await your reply.  8)

Fatality-

Did you check the permissions for the post count groups as well, many admins neglect this part.

Yes, I would. Why muck about with all that, though?

Just register me with whatever details you like and PM hem to me. Once I've done what needs to be done, you can just delete me, completely.

Small delay, though, sadly. Death in the family means I won't be able to do anything until Saturday evening, UK time.

Sorry 'bout that.

First I wish to send my condolences to Kat.  :( This is always a difficult time in life and I sincerely hope that you will come out of it with your heart still intact.

As this is not a post count group I am unsure of what this will do, yet I will look into it and see what is what.   :-\  Thanks for the suggestion.   ;D

Take Care,

Okay,

I deleted the membergroup "Secondary Newbie" cuz it sort of matched Newbie, and then added (without results I might say) Secondary 1.

I set the viewable boards to one board "Welcome", I went through all 62 boards permissions and un-checked regular member, and un-checked Secondary 1.

Magically, my mockmember (who I as the admin set the Primary Membergroup as  Secondary 1) can see and post throughout the Forum (except for the category and boards I added for the admins and assist. admins to use, go figure).

So I am wondering if I should add another Forum and just have myself and my assist. admins run both of them.

Or should I just take down the Forum and tell the Survivors that they will have to find compassion and supprot somewhere else cuz I can't get the Forum to work as it should.

I await your advise on this continuing more complex problem

Thanks for your comments, mate. The whole thing went rather well, to be honest. It turned more into a celebration, rather than something more morose, which is the way it should be, I think.

My offer still stands, if you want to take it up, of course. We could even try and arrange a time when we're both around, so I'm not lurking around without you being aware.

No way  :o I'm sure Kat will get everything sorted out for you. I'd start posting about this problem, but that'll only confuse matters.

Hang tight and it'll soon be the way want it.

I am a little confused, i just want to get a good handle on the situation here.

What primary group is this mock member in?
Which Secondary groups is this mock member in.

Board permissions are cumulative, meaning that any group that gives them access to that board, will allow them access.   The board being unchecked in their primary group but checked for their secondary group will allow them access.

Also, have you done a 'show permissions' from their profile?  If i remember correctly, it should tell you which boards they can and cannot see.

BlackMage,

Thank you for your reply.  I will look into this further as I have looked at the permissions through the profile and discovered that there are some areas that mockmember cannot access and I will try to see what is different about them.

Be Well,
Tom

BlackMage,

Not yet,  Had it for about 5 - 10 minutes, but "software" kicked in and gave usergroup "Secondary Survivor" permissions of usergroup "newbie" even though usergroup "newbie" is a post count group and usergroup "Secondary Survivor" is NOT a post count group.

Hmmm ........

Again, I will post the forum's link so that Kat or anyone else that is offering to assist will have an idea of what the forum's content is.

Thank you for your continued interest.

PS I don't think it matters, but for clarity, it was decided to change the name of "Secondary Survivors" to "Supporting Members"

BlackMage,

I want to thank you so very much for all your time and efforts;D
Apparently, it didn't stick, work, whatev.  :o
I wonder if the desires I have are beyond the scope of the software's capabilities.  :(
(see below)

So, if this is the case, where do I download another one so that I can and set it up as forum2 (assuming that my hosting account will support the website, two forums, and a chat room :o).  :-\

Additionally, a full description of all functions (I saw this somewhere, it's like 75 pages long) would be appreciated. ::)  I really really like the software and the look of the classic theme and all:D

Keep up the great work!  :D

Your Faithful User,  O:)

All post counting, non staff, no primary membergroup members: will be grouped into Regular members group (as seen by admin > Boards) -- give them access to these boards, rather than the post count groups, which apply to all groups regardless of primary group if they have the required post count

Add a supporter group -- remove access to the survivor area from this group -- put the supporters in this group. When you add a supporter, change their group to this.

Tom @ Your Sanctuary

BlackMage,

Thank you again for your work.  As I understand it, anyone that is in a post counting group is a "regular member".

I had previously gone into to Regular Members group and denied each and everything permission that they have, board by board.

Also, once a member is assigned into a membergroup, they are no longer a "regular member".  Right??  So, thusly what I do with regular members is not instrumental.     er something

According to the second portion of your post, you state:
"Add a supporter group -- remove access to the survivor area from this group -- put the supporters in this group. When you add a supporter, change their group to this."
This was done long ago, though without any visable results.  Humph.

greyknight17,
Thank you for the link to the list of functions.  Perhaps I can find a way out of this after all.

Lastly, I hope I adequately explained what I desire.

May both of you be well and the warmth of your kindness be returned,
Tom

regular members is *anybody* without another primary usergroup (see their account settings), when it comes to board access

Post count groups apply to anyone with that post count or above, up until the next post group.

BlackMage,

"regular members is *anybody* without another primary usergroup (see their account settings), when it comes to board access"

Got that, so, once I make them a "Supporting Member", they are no longer a "regular member".

Additionally I went to permission settings and un-checked the "Allow Deny" box and I also reset all "regular member" permissions to nothing checked.

BTW, anytime you have that you want to bop in and take a look, you are welcomed.

Did you understand what I wanted based on the post I made this afternoon (pacific time) LOL
