Well off the top of my head I'd like to see "recent posts" added to the menu bar like most other forums have.

That exists in "core" (1.1 default theme) at the top of the page already. Likewise with the Babylon theme. It isn't in Classic because that theme is meant to reproduce an older style.

I'd like long urls shortened automatically instead of the admin having to download a mod to fix it & friendly seo urls

A few points:

  • URL rewriting requires certain configurations that some hosts don't support.
  • "Friendly" URLs have little to no effect on SEO.
  • If the software did it automatically, and your host suddenly changed the configuration to work with it, your board would suddenly change. This would damage SEO, actually.

No you are talking about "unread" & "unreadreplies".  I've had to add recent posts myself below

Nothing wrong with having the option though is their and making it more user friendly ?

I think it's a damn site better than having a left/right scroll bar on threads just because someone's posted a long url lol

So, you mean the latest posts, regardless if the user has read them or not?

Nothing wrong with the choice, which is why there is one in the admin area. Having the software automatically choose the mode based on configuration of the server kinda defeats the point of the choice, however.

You can't prevent that, really. You will need to ask all sites in existence to use shorter URLs, and kill services like HugeURL (yes, I know it's a joke service...). You can always use the Trim URL mod to shorten the display of long URLs.

Yes it's a feature on the biggest sites like vb and  Invision

Well what can I say it doesn't seem to be a problem for vb or invision

Okay, I guess I got two things confused together.

Item #1: Collapse the display of long URLs.
Item #2: "SEO friendly" board URLs.

Item #1 does indeed have a mod, which is a great option for those admins that want that kind of feature. As for being part of the core code, it probably won't happen in 2.0 as it is basically feature-frozen so bugs can be swatted for a final release. Of course, the beauty of the SMF mod system is that it is easy to any items you think are missing.

As for item #2, I don't think there has been any further conversation on it in the last exchanges. For some reason, I had conflated items #1 and #2 into this issue alone.

Another 2.0 feature I am really excited about not yet mentioned in this thread I think is OpenId support.

I was completely lost with that but can see it now ;)

HecKel

hummm, I am wondering about some thing...

How development team decide about the new features?

SMF 7 is where it gets good. That has time travel. You can go back and post before the guy who flamed you. :P

HecKel,

We roll two dice and if it comes up snake eyes it makes it in!

lol :P

ok ok, I'll try again :P

You decide by yourself or you consider anything else? Like most popular mods and so on...?

We look at requests made by users, popular mods, what other software is doing, and what we think is lacking and put it altogether to try and work out what represents the best value, in particular considering:
1) Speed impact of feature (Will it slow down the average user's load times/increase server CPU)
2) Ease of use of said feature (i.e. we don't add something which only hardcore admins can half understand)
3) % of users likely to use said feature
4) Difficulty of said feature being made a mod.

So, for example, post moderation was added to 2.0 because whilst it will have some performance hit (albeit quite small it's probably the biggest performance hit of all the features added) it was thought that it's relatively easy for admins to apply. It will be well used by forums (i.e. high percentage take up) and it's almost impossible to make a *good* post moderation mod (Trust me I've released a couple in the past) as it needs to be so well integrated into the core. When you take the points above and couple it with the fact that many other forums have this feature it seemed like a no-brainer.

I like SMF the way it is.

There are 3 things I personally enjoy in the 'aura' that surrounds SMF and its Devs:
- SMF is a Forum first of all, and devs don't wish to spread too much to the blog-gallery-social-chat kind of stuff, which although related, aren't exactly part of a forum;
- What SMF does, it does very well, no matter if it's security, core features, performance, or any other thing we talk about;
- SMF wants to be free the whole way ;D, which I think is admirable from every point of view.

Sure, who wouldn't like to have this new gadget here, this new feature there... My forum is over 30 Mods + custom theme + hundreds other customizations, and I still try to improve it everyday. But as long as those 3 basic principles remain intact in the spirit of SMF, I trust 100% in SMF Devs and in their ability to understand and adapt SMF to the evolving world around us.

riker

I remember when phpBB3 was beta/rc some sites had a demo where you could try it out and sign into the admincp panel so I was just wondering if SMF had thought about doing this ?

Paracelsus

I'm sure they'll do that as soon as they have a very capable Beta... hopefully Beta 3 already. ;)
