Need help integrating SMF into web site

I've just installed SMF (within the last 12 hours), and am quite happy with it overall- however, getting it to nest inside my web site is not so nice.  :)  I'm using the latest release with the blackandwhite theme.  I've got it inside a table cell on my page, and it;s not playing well with that.  The CSS appears to be overriding the overall page CSS  (I should probably expect this...), and logging in seems to cause the board the disappear!  (I've also found my admin account has an eternal login when I hit the board from Firefox...and when I try to log out, it says there's a sessions error, and I should login again...which I can't until I log out....)

The layout issue is the most pressing, and I appreciate any help or advice I can find here.  The forum can be found at http://www.paxbrewitas.org/forum [nofollow].  You can look at the other pages to see how the layout is supposed to look.

Apologies in advance if I did something obviously stupid.  ;)

you'd be best off emulating your page layout within the SMF theme than trying to wrap SMF into it -- it will break the forum.

All of the HTML for the header/above and below the page is in index.template.php in /Themes/themename

OK, I'll try that index.template.php.  I was able to get PHPbb to integrate this way, and as streamlined and simple as SMF seems to be, I'd bet there's a way to get it to work, as well!

Thanks for the heads up.

you'd add the html in /Themes/themename/index.template.php -- search for <body>.  Around there is where you can add in your html.

Ok, i feel like i have successfully wrapped my website headers and footers into the smf template. However, i have one annoying problem.

My site is a fixed width, with 720px for the main content area. most of smf works fine, apart from the post  message window being too wide.

The site is hxxp:www.psychspace.co.uk/smf [nonactive], although the forum is locked so you can't see the problem directly. I can print screen if you like, although the problem can be replicated simply by shrinking your browser window.

I have looked though the post template and the css template but cannot find the object which is preventing the message window shrinking below a certain size. Can anyone help?

Check the body attribute in style.css.  You should be able to add width: 720px; or whatever is appropriate depending on your layout -- or edit what is already there :)

Thanks for the suggestion, i tried that and it didn't work. However i have found a solution...

It is the subject text box which is too wide and was expanding the size of the reply table beyond the limits of my site. A little bit of digging and i found the size and max length properties of the box and changed them from 80 to 65.

So the problem is now fixed, however, all you people who run forums, and especially those who developed smf and decided that 80 char was the optimum size. Am i likely to run into problems in the future by having the size set to only 65?

shouldn't be an issue so long as you changed the size and not the maxlength attribute :)
