hello and quick question

hello to everybody
i have been browsing through the site for a day or two and there seems to be some very knowledgeable peeps
i am totally new to forum design and web hosting but have managed to install smf 
i am going searching now to see how i install new category's and subcategory's (think thats what you call them) 
anyway to my question can i design my forum off line then upload the files once i have finished it, and if so how do i view the forum off line

i also apologise if this is in the wrong section

Welcome to Simple Machines. You could do this if you were running a server on your computer. However; you can install a forum and put it in maintenance mode so no one can get into it but you until you are done customizing it. Under Boards in the admin panel is how you will make catagories and such.
