has anyone used open ads which is now openx with smf?

If so are you using it with the ad mod?  :)

!Hachi!

if you get html/php codes from open ads it should work fine with ad management mod.

From what I can tell that is an Ads Server system?  So it's a stand alone program that you then call from other sources, just like adsense?

Yes and yes I'm using it with the Ad Management Mod!

Works well, lets you place your own ads and/or intermix them with Google ads. Keeps tracking of number of times ads are shown to rate performance of particular ads and of course it records clicks. Basically it can be set up to "sell" your advertising space with advertisers permitted access through their own login, this gives the advertiser an element of control over what they do (their permissions are totally under your control). If your interested in this sort of thing then OpenX is well worth a look, and yup its free!

I've not quite got things the way I want them yet as I would like to have multiple ads running in the same banner zone sililar to how Google place their vertical Ads, but I'm working on getting a solution to that with the coders on here.

Ive just come across OpenX and would be interested in hearing more about it... does it integrate easily with SMF? Im using 1.1.5, sounds like its exactly what i need for my site... would appreciate any more feedback from people who have/or are using it :)

Bec,
Been using OpenX for a few months now. Not that I have any advertisers apart form my own experimental ones, but yes install it on your server and insert their codes into the Ad Management Mod and that's it.

Their Control Panel and terminology takes a bit of getting used to but yes I'm sure it will fit the bill for many SMF users.

Sadly their forum isn't nearly as helpful as this one and it would be VERY nice if SMF would set up a dedicated category to cover OpenX then we could get some REAL dialogue going, after all SMF use OpenX to deliver their ads.

Keep us informed on your progress.

Urbanite, thanks for the feedback great appreciate it! Will keep you posted! :)

Bec

just one question... did you keep it all on the same database or create a new one?

Urbanite

You need to create a new OpenX database that will hold your ads, banners etc. They recommend that you keep it on the same server that the site/s you wish to deliver the ads is on, but as far as I can make out it will work from a different server.

thanks appreciate the advice, i was a little scared about putting it on my current database just in case it stuffed anything up. :)

The easy method is to put the javascript code from OpenX into the ad management mod. Ideally though you'll want to manually edit the SMF theme files and add the javascript their instead of using the ad mod to save queries and generally get faster page loads.
