A good feature for SMF would be merging 2 users (lets say these users are actually the person A,B)

So via the admin panel you can merge these 2 members ids and it will combine all there posts and info into 1 user account. The admin would than be able to change the name of the account.

This option would suit under                       Forum Maintenance.

There's a work around in SMF 2.0 by deleting User B and then Admin > Maintenance > Reattribute User Posts User B's posts to User A.

True but what if you want to delete user C because its user A. Than its posts will go to user B.

Wow say that 10 times fast...

Nah. You can attribute User C to User A if you want (as well as User B, by running it more than once)

It will reattribute (change the owner of those posts) the posts to whichever user ID you put in. If you put in User A's ID, it will change the posts' ownership to User A. Same if you put in User Z's ID.
