Hello everyone just wondering why I got this error message?

Database Error: MySQL server has gone away
File: /mnt/w0600/d45/s06/b026cb54/www/forum/Sources/Security.php
Line: 275

I have not changed any settings any ideas on what I can do to see what is wrong? some times it happens sometimes it doe not only started seeing this issue yesterday.

Thanks in advance.

gizmonel

Is this a time out error by any chance?

H

It normally means that the connection was lost to MySQL. Most likely the server is busy or it is configured incorrectly. You could try contacting your host :)

One of my users is getting this error too (but me and most of my users can connect and post fine)

gizmonel

I will contact hosting company when its not too busy. :D

How do I know my settings are correct?

Thanks!

Rumbaar

Have you got any bans in place?  Maybe a large number of hostname lookup style bans?

This issue has not happened for quite a while now. :)

No bans that I know of Rumbaar. :)

Rumbaar

It might have been an issue with the mySQL server itself.  Hopefully your host has addressed any issue that might have been in place.

Hey guys just a quick question, I have been getting

"Database Error: MySQL server has gone away
File: /mnt/w0600/d45/s06/b026cb54/www/forum/Sources/Subs.php
Line: 3200"

Which is different from the above error what code this be? as my site gets more traffic this seems to happen more often. Is there a system to check if files are ok on my server or something? Most of the time 90% it is online.

vbgamer45

That's an issue with the mysql configuration/host issue. Either it is too busy for mysql server to keep up or the connection is getting dropped.

gizmonel

Thanks Vbgamer45 so it is not a software issue? It is my hosting company that needs to fix this?

How do I check mysql configuration?

Its still doing same thing this morning

Thanks!

alexcasti

I am having similar problems, Ive moved everything in my server to solve it, but it wont help.

What is interesting is that I manage 3 more different forums with more users and traffic in the same server, with other script than smf and all works fine.

Can this be a bug?

I am on SMF 1.1.5

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Rumbaar

@gizmonel I doubt you'll have direct control of access to your mySQL servers configuration options.

@alexcasti so what other forums do you have that have more users and less stress on your mySQL?  Would be interesting to know.

I am hosted with Netfirms, I have talked to them this morning, they said it was repair database then optimize it. after doing that (they did it on their end) it still same issue

http://www.theweightingroom.com/forum/

It is way at the bottom under users online

Database Error: MySQL server has gone away

Line: 3200

I am frustrated

Rumbaar

When do you get that error exactly?  What are you doing or trying to do?  As general viewing of the forum seems okay.
"An important reward for a job well done is a personal sense of worthwhile achievement."

[ Themes ]

gizmonel

When I go to http://www.theweightingroom.com/forum (main screen) also happen in forum screen. All I get is main screen and at bottom in the square that says users online I get that error.

Its frustrating because I changed nothing.

Rumbaar

Very strange then, as I like I said I have no issue viewing your main page or forum.  I just visited again and was about move to the forum, view various threads without and errors or issues.

If you log out do you get the same issue?  If not there is something that is displaying to either logged in people or you as admin that is causing the mySQL db to loose connection.

Well even at work today I was not logged in and same error showed and its a public computer.

Won't let me log out as it defaults to error.

How can I check on whats displaying to other viewers, can you please help me?

Rumbaar

You can try clearing your cache and cookies to force a log out.  But I don't know why I'm not having issues and you are.  Do you have any ads on your site, I have blocks in place that block most of that code which might help me.

I'm viewing using Firefox 3 as well.

Ok same error when I am logged in but no error when I am logged out, whats up with this? I do not have any ads on my site.

What I fear is goofing up the forum and then start from scratch again I am very novice at this.

Rumbaar

Do you know of any code you've installed that is only displayed to logged in members?  Maybe a custom TP block?

From other members,

Different screen this time.

Database Error: MySQL server has gone away
File: /mnt/w0600/d45/s06/b026cb54/www/forum/Sources/MessageIndex.php
Line: 606

Rumbaar

Can you attach your Subs.php and MessageIndex.php files, maybe take a look at those particular lines and the code surrounding them.
"An important reward for a job well done is a personal sense of worthwhile achievement."

[ Themes ]

gizmonel

Ok got both files from the sources directory, this is where I get them correct? Not from my sites them directory?

Rumbaar

The Subs error looks like it's an issue when it's trying to compare session information from log_online table.  You can try to truncate that table and your sessions table.  Then you'll have to log in again, most likely, and then see if you still get the issue.

Do you have Enable Participation icon option on?  If so try and turn it off and see if your users still get the MessageIndex.php error?
"An important reward for a job well done is a personal sense of worthwhile achievement."

[ Themes ]

gizmonel

Thanks,

I had Enable Participation icon enabled and now it is disabled.

How can I truncate the Subs table and sessions table? Can you please help me. Also did I get these files from right folder?

Rumbaar

The files should have come from ./Sources/ folder in your forums root.

You can go to your phpMyAdmin and perform the emptying of those tables from there.  Be sure to get the correct tables and make a backup of the db before hand (just in case).
"An important reward for a job well done is a personal sense of worthwhile achievement."

[ Themes ]

gizmonel

ok in my phpmyadmin it does not say where it is located just has a table list and sessions is in it do I empty this?

gizmonel

Ok dumping the sessions table did nothing and can't find the subs table where is that?

Someone has told me that my web hosting plan needs to go up one level because the one I got now has little resources for forum? but why all the problems now?

This is the plan I got http://www.netfirms.com/web-hosting/web-hosting-plus/web-hosting-plus-specs/

Rumbaar

Well I only suggested truncating/emptying the {prefix}sessions and {prefix}log_online tables in your SMF db via phpMyAdmin.  Not sure what you mean by subs table or what you are trying to do there.

But yes a host lacking in resources can mean the configuration of mySQL server is in a way to cause such errors.
"An important reward for a job well done is a personal sense of worthwhile achievement."

[ Themes ]

gizmonel

so it is a resource issue then?

Rumbaar

It could be, but I was trying to make sure any rouge data in those tables wasn't causing it either.  But with any forum you've modified from base code, issue might be put into place that might cause an unnecessary load on a server.

Just talked to support they are looking into the mysql error

gizmonel

Still have not got this resolved GRRRR

What exatly is File: /mnt/w0600/d45/s06/b026cb54/www/forum/Sources/Subs.php? I still get the mysql error when I login and try to post and navigate forum.

Web hosting tech support is working on this too.

HELP!

Rumbaar

What do you mean what is that file?  Subs.php is a core file that the forum uses.

As you host is looking into it, are they able to supply info on the exact issue when the access to the mySQL server is lost?
"An important reward for a job well done is a personal sense of worthwhile achievement."

[ Themes ]

gizmonel

No but they are forcing me to either strip down forum to make it faster or get better hosting.

I have downloaded the subs.php file to take a look at it, then uploaded it again and now am getting

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /mnt/w0600/d45/s06/b026cb54/www/forum/Sources/Subs.php on line 3070

HELP!

Rumbaar

Well what did you use to 'look' at it? and did you save the file when you did?  Also what did you use to download and re-upload that file?

PS: FYI. You had attached your Subs.php file a few posts ago.
"An important reward for a job well done is a personal sense of worthwhile achievement."

[ Themes ]

gizmonel

I used FTP client to download and used text editor

Rumbaar

The specific text editor you used??  Did you save it once you had opened it?  Try to upload the version you posted previously and see if that resolves your issue.

How would I import database info into a new forum if I were to start from scratch? Right now it wont accept my database info do i need to change prefix so it id accepted?

Rumbaar

How do I save the database data?
How do I restore the database data?

I personally export from phpMyAdmin including data and drop tables, then import.  The size of the db can be a factor in the process required to upload a database.
"An important reward for a job well done is a personal sense of worthwhile achievement."

[ Themes ]

gizmonel

ok I have exported my data now do I delete this database and create a new one? Also I see no option to import.

gizmonel

Ok deleted old database, created new one and can not get access now this is so frustrating

gizmonel

WOOHOO got SMF installed again but now how do I import all the data from my old file? Do I just insert table?

Rumbaar

Did you read the links I provided?
"An important reward for a job well done is a personal sense of worthwhile achievement."

[ Themes ]

gizmonel

Yes of course but I see no import action in myphp

Rumbaar

In phpMyAdmin, select the database name.  You should now see a tab for IMPORT.  If it's largish, then you might have to use BigDump (which is a great resource).

FYI, there is a duplicate topic over here that has gone past the import stage. I'm locking it and directing replies to this one so it doesn't split efforts.

Rumbarr I found out how to import with my phpmyadmin version :)

Ok great progress on getting forum back up and running accept a few errors with themes, I only have one theme installed (core theme) but yet when I go to admin theme section I still get a list of all other themes I had how can I clean this list up and only have core listed until I find a new template?

Is this possible?

Also the user names text is in white when I click on "users online" at bottom of screen, when I click on this and the users online list hows up the user name is in white can I make this black? And will this change be universal when I upload new themes?

Thanks in advance.

Rumbaar

You might want to start new topics for your new specific issues.

This can help support know what is outstanding and also help any future searches for specific issues and solutions.  When you have a single thread with a mixture of on going issue it can be hard for anyone else coming in to know what is what and offer assistance.  This is also why it's best to limit one topic per issue and not cross post.

Also when doing so, try to make subject titles as short and descriptive as possible.
