Alright, so.... I wonder...

What do you think are the most important/standard smilies?  Here we have:

:) ;) :D ;D >:( :( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-* :'( >:D ^-^ O0
:) ;) :D ;D >:( :( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-* :'( >:D ^-^ O0

Now, on my forum (way back...) we all voted and decided that the kissing one (:-*) was the MOST useless and hateful.

So... my question is, what smilies would you say are... standard?  Like maybe ones SMF is lacking, as current...

Someone should do some data mining to see what smilies are the most used, least used etc. :D

FWIW, I've never used the alleged Asian or Afro smilies, but I like the evil/devil one. I don't like winky smilies very much despite their popularity with others, but have used the original YaBB SE kiss (not this one!) once in a blue moon. Perhaps more to the point, I tend to use/avoid smilies as much based on the particular set in use as the supposed meaning, so I avoid most of this lot (which I hate, apart from the splendidly graphic 'lips sealed') and would probably not like some of my posts elsewhere if the smiley set was changed to another one post-posting!

Well, you did ask... >:D

I myself am a fan of the animated roll eyes smilie, not the current one

[Unknown]

Well.. I'm asking about smilie codes (for example :-/, T_T, or (trillian)..) not actual images...

Weren't we going to make that part of the smily code optional? Something that allowed you to specify what smilies you wanted to use.

Yes, but there are always defaults.

And I'm aware of that, but still felt it was worth making the point that, if personal experience is anything to go by, folk may be influenced in their choice of smiley codes by the prospect of them being converted into particular images!

If it's any help, I always include the nose if I'm typing them outwith a BB/forum situation, and stick mostly to a very restricted set eg :-) ;-) :-I :-( :-/ :-D :-O :-P. YaBB SE wise, I'd probably use a few more (eg shocked, cool, confused, roll eyes), but avoid the winky one because there's just something about manufactured winky smilies that gets me! ;)

If anything, I also subscribe to the notion that, while they're clearly here to stay, smiley graphics in general lack some of the whimsy and spontaneity of the text sort, as well as only being able to cover a fraction of the shades of meaning you'll find in some of the more esoteric text smiley glossaries.

I find that I use the wink the most, then the smile, then crying. The same on trillian. I use brb and LMAO a lot on trillian.

I'm of the opinion that every forum needs a ninja smiley. :P

I third the idea of a sleepy smiley.  Perfect for when people are rambling.

I also tend to use the old YaBB SE confused smiley, which I don't really see a replacement for here.  It's good when someone says stuff you don't know what the heck they mean, or when you are highly frustrated by a problem.

One forum I was on, forget which, had a great laughing smiley which would be nice to have.  It was animated and sort of bounced up and down.  Either that or the sideways rolling smiley, like this,  , would be cool.
"If you're an ugly chick, you're basically the same as a dude... I mean, you're gonna have to work."
