Hello everyone,

I'm having some troubles with beta 3...

When using the Show "Unread messages" option, users don't get the new messages (unread) list.

But when browsing the Forum, new message icons are active and everything looks ok.

Any ideia?

Thank you so much,

metallica48423

not heard of this happening?  have you tried running the repair and optimize options under the forum maintenance section?

Hello,

I've got exactly the same problem on a second forum I've got.
It's a french and brent new installation.
I've got 2 messages in the forum and with action=unread;all the list is definitivly empty.
Of course I'm using another account ;-)

Bye

I still haven't been able to reproduce this -- can you provide a test account? (user access only please)

We're having the same or a similar problem with SMF 2.0 Beta 3.1 Public.

I'm trying to determine if I can get you user-level access.  In the meantime here's what happens to us...

  • A new member registers on our forum and logs in.  At this point the forum contains, for example, 150 posts in 20 boards spread among 5 categories that all predate this new users registration.
  • The Unread Posts link (action=unread;c=n) in the upper right of each category table returns no posts for this new user.  This is a little disconcerting because the user can clearly see that the category has simple machine icons that are "lit" and "new" icons when they navigate to a board.

I see that the unread action is also assigned to the link at the top of our forum which says, "Show unread posts since last visit."  Since a new member would not have a LAST visit, I can understand why this would return no posts.  But it is the same action as the link labeled Unread Posts in the category tables--so I'm assuming they both do the same thing--in the case of a brand new member they return no post that pre-dates the new members registration/logon date.

Is there a way that a brand new member can get a listing of ALL existing unread posts--preferably sorted by board.  I understand that this also amounts to ALL existing posts in the forum.

So far the only way we've found around this is to suggest to our user's that they manually visit each and every board and review the posts.  After performing this task the Unread Posts and "Show unread posts since last visit" links behave as expected.

On one hand I can understand that a forum with many thousands of posts might not want to commit the resources to retrieve and sort all existing posts to display them to a new user.  On the other hand, I'm hoping there is a solution for our small forum whose user's may never have seen a forum in their life--and are confused by the "disconnects" they perceive in the UI.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

waynewalls:  did you try adding ;all to the end of the URL when viewing ?action=unread?

Yes, I've tried ?action=unread;all and ?action=unread;c=n;all.  Both behave like I have described above.

Is there anything else that  I can try?

Thanks for your help.

how many posts are on your board?

Currently less than 200.  When it gets up and running probably no more than 500/month

can you register a test account for me and pm me the login for it?  Preferably one without any logins on it prior to my logging into it

metallica48423 did check out our forum and suggested I create a post in the Bug Report board.
