Help coding this

Here's what I need but I don't know how to get it:

When someone puts [player]player name[/player] I need to have it search my database for player name, then find the player ID number and make the [player]player name[/player] a link

id=player ID should be whatever the player ID is.

Can someone help me figure out how to do this?
